Abstract
In the middle age the city of Volterra had a control on the roads and bridges that connected the city with his territory and other areas. At the present day the only witnesses of the bridges are some written documents, today preserved in the archives of Volterra. By the examination of these documents is possible know the position of some of these bridges and their construction.
The bridges crossed the main rivers of the area around Volterra, connecting that city with the important mining district of Cecina valley, in the northern Maremma. Most of the information that we have by documents are from the bridge named Ponte del Cavallaro, that crossed the Cecina river, along the road between Volterra and the mines of salt of Montegemoli. It was constructed and restored more time during the middle age.
The main bridges was realized in stone and concrete, with some parts in wood. There were five important bridges on the rivers of Cecina, Era, Ragone, Arpino and Fregione, the main watercourses of that territory.
